We were encouraged to leave our room keys hung at the side of the reception so that we didn't lose them and so we didn't think anything of this until we came home from the pub at 12:30 am only to find

We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay and very sorry that you got locked out on your 1st night. Yes on your registration card you are encouraged to leave your key - unless staying out late. I quote what is printed right by your signature. "Please leave your key at reception every time you leave the building, UNLESS coming in late so needing the outside door key on the same ring." Thank you for your appreciative comments about our food.

We loved the location and the beer is good
The staff are very nice and friendly
Dislikes:
Getting served cold tea and coffee at breakfast on the first morning and milk that was off on the second morning
Having a cot in our room felt a bit weird!!!

Many thanks for your kind comments about the staff, location and beer on this a return visit. We are truly sorry about tea and coffee one morning, our boiling water boiler leaked over night and our staff were going to the bar with shoes full of water making tea and coffee (the kitchen was two inches deep) trying not to inconvenience you; we are sorry if it wasn't quite right. As far as the milk is concerned we are at a loss - best before dates are adhered to strictly. We have written privately.

Our room (9) was right at the top of the building and as a rather mature, somewhat creaky pair, we found all the stairs, firedoors and corridors a bit of a trial.The bathroom was inadequate.

Many thanks for your kind comments. As far as stairs & fire doors are concerned there's not much choice - 17th century listed building. Unfortunate; you were in the furthest possible room from reception - if only you'd said on booking or even when here, we'd have been only too happy to place you in a 1st floor room nearer to the centre of things. Not sure what was inadequate in your bathroom - it has a full sized bath, wash basin & loo. Perhaps the charachteristic sloping ceiling was a problem.

Its character and the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff.
Dislikes:
Service at dinner on Sunday was friendly but very slow. We went down before 7pm & were waiting for our sweet at 8.50;one of the restricted choice of 3 sweets was not available. See fair rating above

Many thanks for your comments. Glad you enjoyed your 3 night stay and look forward to your return visit. So sorry that one of the desserts that are included on the special offer ran out, my apologies - its just not always possible to guess right who will order what, and as everything is homemade - there isn't "one in the freezer" you should have been offered an alternative from the longer list of desserts that aren't included - if you weren't - again apologies.

Generally a feeling of they have got this right. The hotel itself is oak beam so everywhere is wonky, just adds to the character.Shower in room 21 an experience not to be missed lol
Dislikes:
The mattress was not very comfortable. Seemed to be a lot of running repairs done. Notices had attitude."People do not want to here your ring tones" where "please turn your phone off" would have done

Many thanks for your kind comments and extending your stay. Will check out mattress as it is less than 12 months old. If only "please turn off your phone would work" unfortunately it is a continual problem in a rural area; poor signal means we continually have people shouting in to their phone in our quite small bar area! However we take your point and will have a go at re-wording. The shower in room 21 is a really good one - not sure what problem you had - was it switched on/off at the wall?

The food was a disappointment considering the number of rosettes it had won duck was overcooked,the welsh wine

Yes we are really sorry, a group of guests had been in the pool before & splahed so much water over the lights that the whole electrics fused causing the pump to stop working ie skimminhg hair etc off the surface. We certainly apologise for the inconvenience. (The sauna key was on the hook behind her & she had been working for us for 3 months) We'll have to agree to differ about the duck legs - we would cook duck breast to pink but not legs. Delighted you enjoyed the wine. Will contact directly.

Thank you for your kind comments about our staff and food it is appreciated. As far as the bed is concerned; a double (not a 4 poster or twin) room for 2 adults was booked but you arrived with a child to share your bed - a standard double would be narrow for 3 people. Lisa checked the bathroom and despite not being able to detect any smell offered to move you to another room - which was declined.
