The origin of The Stonemason’s Inn is as a row of fifteenth century cottages. Its history has been preserved, as evidenced by the dining areas-where fires glow in their hearths in winter. We pride ourselves on our home cooked food, range of wel kept local ales and comfortable character en suite accommodation. We look forward to extend you a warm welcome.

Party of two, mother & adult daughter. On arrival, only 1 bed made up. Was asked if needed 2nd bed, said yes, they agreed to make new bed, never happened! No hot water in shower/bath. No time to ask anyone in evening to sort this as we needed to get going for party & no one around in morning to ask. The cold water made it very difficult to get ready for NYE party, which was the whole point of us staying in Petworth. Noisy pipe work all night, meant no sleep what so ever. Not a great stay. Likes:
The rooms were big and the bed, that was made up, was comfortable. Relaxing feel to the rooms, until the pipeworks start making a racket.
Dislikes:
Arrived back from NYE party (after midnight) to find 2nd bed not made. My mother had to sleep in her dressing gown & slippers with only spare sheet from 3rd bed as cover. The water was very, very cold

"Nice quiet location."
Our stay started with a smelly cold room. Not a good start. The heat was turned on when we entered the room for the first time. The smell was not very nice at all and never went away. I assume the cob webs were a feature of the place as there were plenty of them even at lower levels IE - ground. The bed was lumpy and noisy. I had to turn the heating on in the bath room as it was cold. The radiator valve then leaked onto the floor. Other than that it was ok. Read less

Quiet area which was close to coolham. The place also had a nice centre with shops to walk about in.
Dislikes:
Why is Guinness so expensive?

Our aim is to provide comfortable accommodation in this wonderful building with its medieval oak beams and character fireplaces, combined with the very best of hospitality, home cooked food, local ales, wines and spirits.
Situated on the very edge of the historic town of Petworth, opposite the magnificent Petworth House and Petworth Park, the Stonemasons Inn is ideally located to wander around Petworth’s many antiques shops, to explore the rolling hills of the South Downs, or simply to stop off and recharge the batteries on the way to the South Coast.
The Stonemasons Inn is an ideal base from where to explore the South Coast and Sussex, with Goodwood, Fontwell and Arundel only a mere 20 minutes away, while the polo fields of Cowdray are even closer.
The origin of The Stonemason’s Inn is as a row of fifteenth century buildings, probably all cottages. It is uncertain when the buildings were first used as a hostelry, but the position on the outskirts of the town and near a busy road junction would have been a prime one for many centuries. The present use certainly dates from at least 1780 and the Inn has been variously called Vinson’s, The Mason’s Arms, The Trap and latterly The Stonemason’s Inn.
Much effort has gone in to preserving parts of its history, as evidenced by the quaintly named Uncle Jed’s Parlour, and Mrs. Smith’s cottage-both used now as dining areas-where fires glow in their open hearths in winter. We pride ourselves on the quality of our home cooked food and well kept local ales from national and micro breweries, while our comfortable en suite accommodation boast lots of character: although the amenities are entirely modern!
