The hotel is ideally situated and the views were stunning. Our room was very nice and comfortable but I think that the evening meals were a little overpriced for what was on offer. The staff were helpful and friendly, albeit all very young, but I think at least one more mature person should have been on duty. The kitchen appeared not to have a specific chef for our first night and the meal was, I believe, just warmed up. Generally though a pleasant but not excellent stay. Read less
Likes:
Comfortable and spacious room with an excellent breakfast.
Dislikes:
Finding two pairs of old knickers stuffed down the back of a bedside cabinet. They would appear not to have been tidied up by the cleaners. The duty manager was apologetic though.

"Functional and pleasant"
We booked in a room which was a reduced rate. The room was sited in the back of the hotel where all facilities were present although there were signs of some wear and tear. We didn't see the rooms in the main house. The room we had was functional but would not stay much time in it if we could help it. Read less

"Character hotel in good position in Hay."
We spent four days and three nights at the Swan. The character and position of the hotel is excellent. The staff are very friendly and helpful but not intrusive. The food was first class. Felt totally at ease and comfortable at all times. The bedroom was large, clean and had everything we needed, including some very nice biscuits provided with the tea and coffee. The bathroom was also large with bath and shower and some nice toiletries. Read less
Likes:
The staff who worked very hard yet always had time for a chat.
Dislikes:
The only drawback was that the heating seemed a little erratic. Very hot on the upstairs landing but quite chilly in the lounge and weekend dining room.

Our Winter Warmer is ideal for those extending their stay: two nights dinner, bed and breakfast, with your third night of bed and breakfast FREE.
The Swan at Hay is a privately-owned hotel and restaurant in the Marches town of Hay-on-Wye where warm a warm welcome and good food await you. Standing alongside the glorious river Wye, Hay-on-Wye retains all the charm of a late Georgian, early Victorian market town. With its markets, book shops, boutique-style shops and access to the unrivalled scenery of The Black Mountains and Welsh Marches, Hay-on-Wye is the ideal base for your short break. A fine grade-2 listed Georgian coaching inn, we continue to improve and upgrade The Swan, establishing it as one of the premier hotels in the Welsh Marches. Both the décor of the refurbished rooms and the menus in the dining rooms and bistro reflect the wonderful produce that is to be found locally.

As the original ‘Town of Books’ and home to the annual book festival in May, this small town on the England-Wales border has now achieved international recognition. However, it is not just for books and the arts that you visit Hay-on-Wye. Situated within the Brecon Beacons National Park, this is an ideal base from which to walk and explore the glorious hills of The Black Mountains. Fishing on the river Wye, canoeing, gliding, long-distance cycling and horse riding are all offered locally.

For the less energetic, the Welsh Marches, the hard fought-for and largely undiscovered border country, is a true gem with ruined Norman castles and rural churches waiting to be discovered. Cross the Gospel Pass into the hidden Hondu Valley where you will find the ruins of Llanthony Priory and the beautifully crooked Cwmyoy church. Alternatively, visit Hereford, a city dominated by the 12th century cathedral, home to both the Mappa Mundi and England’s largest chained library or travel a little further to Ludlow and en route visit Croft Castle and Berrington Hall, two beautiful National Trust properties.
