Falmouth is steeped in vibrant maritime history; its strategic location led to the town being established as the southernmost Packet Ship port in the UK. In 1688 the post office was established, and by 1817 a fleet of 40 packet ships was carrying passengers and mail to the West Indies and Americas. Today, the port offers marina facilities for the yachtsman, quays for visiting cruise liners and has gained an international reputation as one of the great sailing and watersports centres of the world.
Falmouth’s mild maritime climate is responsible for the exotic sub-tropical quality of its parks and gardens, with many specimens successfully introduced by Victorian plant hunters and packet ship captains. Artists have been drawn to Falmouth for many years by its climate, quality of light and relaxed atmosphere, making the town a creative centre. Each year, University College Falmouth, having built an international reputation for the quality of its teaching, draws new students to the town. You will find the works of numerous artists for sale in the many private galleries around Falmouth.
Sightseeing in Falmouth could not be easier. During the summer months a Park & Float / Park & Ride service links Ponsharden with the town centre. The Falmouth Explorer Bus 400 connects the Town Centre and Falmouth’s beaches and attractions. You can also climb aboard one of the many passenger ferries and pleasure boats that depart from Prince of Wales Pier or Custom House Quay to explore the beauty of the Fal Estuary and Helford River.
