The concept of “Homelands” is:

A home/business with “green” credentials such as reducing energy use and food miles, and using environmentally friendly products.
Proprietors Erik and Nikki Burger have previously owned and operated several small restaurants and hotels in the Cotswold area since the mid 1980's.
They opened their new venture “Homelands” in April 2010.
Nikki is an expert gardener and looks after the Free Range chickens, the eggs of which you will find on the breakfast table. She is also a keen supporter of Racing, and a full Member of the Cheltenham Race Course and the Elite Racing Club. Erik is a keen cook and fan of “real” food- in particular home-baked bread, dry-cured bacon and very tasty sausages. His interest is in nature and conservation, and foraging wild food.

We produce some of our own fruit and vegetables, and have nesting boxes for barn-owls, songbirds, hedge-hocks, insects and bats; as well as a small wildlife pond. We planted indigenous trees in our mini-woodland to produce fire-wood using Short Rotation Coppicing. We have a Solar Photo Voltaic system to generate some of our own electricity. Environmental Statement
The property has an excellent energy rating thanks to efficient wall and roof insulation; the use of energy-efficient light bulbs; double glazing; and a high-efficiency boiler. Water is Metered so we are encouraged not to waste this sparse resource. We produce sufficient wood –a renewable resource- to be self-sustainable for fire-wood for our open fire, BBQ and brick-built Pompeii style Pizza oven, one of our projects for the next Winter. Long-term we are planning to install solar-cell panels on the roof, so we can feed back and sell electricity to the National Grid. We are also investigating the technical feasibility of a thermal bore-hole, using heat-exchange technology. Good food is our passion, and therefore we use a combination of home-produced, home-made, local, seasonal, rare-breed, low food miles, organic, free range and Fair Trade products. Our gardening waste is used by ourselves for firewood or compost - we use special compost worms. All our waste is sorted and recycled.
