Dunvalanree, a small hotel (now listed in the WHICH? Good Hotel Guide as well as the Good Food Guide) and restaurant in Carradale on the Mull of Kintyre, is an ideal centre to explore places like Gigha, Machrihanish and Campbeltown, following in the footsteps of kings and saints and Viking warriors as well as further afield the coasts and islands of Argyll.

We enjoy the peace and tranquility and a chance to relax.
Dislikes:
The biggest disadvantage is its distance from the main road but this can be a big plus when the traffic is heavy.

"Perfect"
Travelling on my own, I was expecting to feel a bit awkward or lonely, but staying at Dunvalanree felt like staying with good friends. Add to this exceptional food, a great whisky menu, a log fire and beautiful surroundings, and you couldn't wish for more. I didn't want to leave, in fact I'm trying to work out how I can go back there soon. I hope Alyson and Alan are there for a long time, so that I can keep going back. This was a very special few days. Dunvalanree, built in 1938 with an Art Deco flavour, was upgraded in 1999 to four star. Most rooms, all individually decorated, enjoy panoramic sea views. Standing in delightful gardens on the edge of Port Righ Bay, Dunvalanree enjoys splendid views over Kilbrannon Sound, to the Isle of Arran, and around Carradale Bay and Forest. Listen ... to the sea gently lapping on the bay below the hotel.
The most popular pastime amongst visitors to Port Righ is walking, and perhaps golf. Fortunately as there are so many choices, from Carradale Bay to the wind farm, walkers are likely to find it very quiet. Dunvalanree has a series of walks based at Port Righ. Some sections of the Kintyre Way are also accessible.
The area abounds in history, from Neolithic to Robert the Bruce. The Scottish nation emerged from the ancient kingdom of Dal Riada which is based around Kintyre, with Somerled, The Lords of the Isles. Saddell was home to one of the stone carving schools of west Scotland.
Campbeltown, once home to about 34 distilleries now has three, including Springbank producers not only of Springbank but also Longrow. Which is your favourite? Dunvalanree has over 60 malts so guests can enjoy a journey of discovery.
After dinner enjoy a Springbank whisky and fall asleep to the sound of the sea gently lapping on the beach below.
