Derry or Londonderry has a strong link to the past. The City has been inhabited since prehistoric times being on an island in the middle of the majestic River Foyle which provided defence and food stuffs. The original name of the city was Calgach which became Doire Columcille with the monastic settlement of St. Columb in 521A.D. from which date the city takes it’s origins. Evidence of this period of history may be seen at the beautiful long tower chapel. The original site of St. Columbs settlement (10 mins walk from the Iona) and Griann Na Alieach (situated in Burt approx. 8 miles away), an impressive ring fort commanding majestic views over the Foyle and Lough Swilly.

The historic City of Derry/Londonerry is a must for all visitors to Ireland and with it's close proximity to the city centre the Iona Inn make it the ideal spot to relax and put your feet up when you are not visiting the sites of the city and surrounding area.

If its a bit craic you are after then Derry sports a vibrant and exciting night life and the Iona Inn is only a stones throw away from the action. If you are not in the mood for a little walk then why not visit the Iona House situated beside the Iona Inn. The bar has been around since the middle of the 19th century and you will always be guaranteed a friendly and fun atmosphere and with the short walk back to bed you have little to worry about at the end of the night.
