"A very memorable Valentine's night"
Decided last minute to book a weekend away for Valentine's and were advised by friends to try the George. Unfortunately they were fully booked for the Saturday night and so had to make do with Sunday night only. Given a lovely warm and cosy room (thanks to a second heater) overlooking the river. Downstairs there was a pleasant lounge area for residents where we spent a couple of hours in front of the log fire.Had an excellent dinner in the dining room along with a good breakfast next morning. A Hotel in a perfect location, with views of the Estuary. An 'easy' long walk by the sea before dinner in a cozy bar or in the restaurant. Good Pub sytle food, with plenty of variety. Staff friendly, bedroom tasefully decorated. Breakfast, with lots of choice in 'conservatory' enjoying views of Estruary. Read less
Dislikes:
Food good but possibly could have a different choice if you eat in the restaurant rather than the bar, possibly a different sytle of food from the bar.

The George III is perfectly located on the southern side of the Mawddach estuary, with fantastic views in both directions and to the hills opposite. The staff are friendly and efficient, the food imaginative and fresh, and the accomodation spacious and comfortable- the lodge is the old Penmaenpool station house converted! Read less
Likes:
The hotel is roughly 2/3 of the way along the Mawddach Trail, which we found vital for the purposes of our hiking- nothing like coming back to a pint by the log fire at the end of a long day's hike!
Dislikes:
There was virtually nothing we could complain about.

The George III Hotel is set on the banks of the magnificent Mawddach Estuary, six miles inland of Barmouth. An historic building this 1650 building was originally two dwellings - a ship chandlers serving the flourishing boat building industry, and a pub. Nearby Barmouth is a popular holiday resort situated on the west coast of Wales, at the mouth of the stunning Mawddach estuary. Surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, it is on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park. It is an ideal area for mountain walks, and also has a large sandy beach and mile-long promenade.
Barmouth also has a harbour used by fishing boats and yachts, and the quayside has a magnificent view across the estuary towards the mountain of Cader Idris. Other attractions in the area include Portmeirion, Coed y Brenin Visitors Centre, Electric Mountain and Corris Railway. The main hotel was built circa 1650 and was once two separate buildings. One half was a pub and the other a ship chandlers’ serving the flourishing boat building industry outside the hotel. The two buildings were matched around 1890 to form what is now the hotel. The Lodge is a Victorian building, built as a waiting room, ticket office and station master’s house for the adjacent station by Cambrian Railways. Great Western took over in the 1920’s followed by British Rail until the line was closed in 1964 by Dr Beeching.
The building was acquired by the hotel in 1977 and extended and renovated to form six bedrooms with private bathrooms.
PLEASE NOTE: Check In is from 15:00 & Check out is by 11:00. We are a no smoking accommodation in the main buiding, however smoking is permitted in the lodge. Pets can be accommodated in the lodge only by prior arrangement.
