I came with a friend , to a Royal Navy reunion. We were met by Kate, the landlady and shown to our rooms. The room was very well appointed and immaculately clean, the views across the bay all the way to Portland Bill, breathtaking.

Self Assessed 4 Stars Guest House

The Downs is a 12 en-suite bedroom, fully licensed establishment located in the ever popular resort of Babbacombe. It benefits from a spacious lounge bar and restaurant with snug area for you to enjoy a coffee after dinner whilst still enjoying the breathtaking views. We have a total of 12 en-suite rooms, 8 with balconies which enjoy fabulous unobstructed views over Babbacombe Downs stretching along the coastline to Teignmouth and out over Lyme Bay all the way to Portland Bill.

This family run establishment welcomes young and old, families, couples and singles alike. Built c.1850 by Isaac Singer, The Downs has a comfortable feel with an emphasis on excellent service now expected by the more discerning traveller. During the summer months the forecourt café provides an additional area to relax and enjoy a light lunch, traditional cream tea or refreshing beer, with the kiosk serving Devon clotted cream ice cream.

For those of you who want to spend the day exploring, or on the beach, packed lunches are available to suit your requirements. Just a stone's throw from Babbacombe is the pretty town centre of St Marychurch - which appears in the Doomsday book. Its pleasant pedestrianised precinct has a fine selection of shops and cafés. Torquay town centre is 1.5 miles away along the Babbacombe Road, passing through Wellswood a popular street lined with shops, cafes and restaurants. Excellent bus links run regularly for those not wishing to walk.
