The hotel's location in Acharacle makes it an ideal base for walking in Ardgour and Ardnamurchan. I have stayed there twice in the past (10 years ago and 5 years ago) and was very pleased to see the traditional character of the hotel basically unchanged although there has been a change of owners. Likes:
It's history and traditional character including the antique furniture, traditonal dining room and original stained glass doors. Also, a very dog friendly hotel.
Response from Loch Shiel House Hotel:
Thank you for your review. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay and agree with you that too many hotels keep modernising for the sake of pressure put on them by the industry. We believe in the old ways and enjoy trying to keep the hotel as traditional as possible for the custom who appreciate this. Many thanks and we hope it will be less than 5 years for your next visit but if it is we hope to see you then!

One night stay during a two week tour of the Highlands. We stayed in several places during our time. Regretfully, this room was at the bottom of the list. Breakfast was pleasant. Otherwise, the room was a big disappointment. The gap b/w the door & frame made the lock pointless. The mattress should have been trashed years ago...there was no, I mean no, cushion left in it & even less in the couch. Never mind the "naked under the kilt" mugs provided with tea service. Read less
Likes:
Nice view of the loch from window. Nice breakfast. Ample poritons & variety. Good service at breakfast.
If you expect very, very basic room accomodations, you will not be disappointed.
Dislikes:
No offer of help with bags at check in. Door to room had BIG gap b/w door & frame making it unsecure & let in a lot of hallway light. The mattress very poor, quality.
Response from Loch Shiel House Hotel:
Hello Jennifer, So sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us. We only purchased the bed in April and no other guests have commented on it. Unfortunately we do not offer a porter service in our small family run hotel but will willingly carry bags if asked. The doorframe has a small gap around but is secure and as the building is 120 years old it has some quirks about it. We will look at it in the winter when we do our maintenance. We are glad you enjoyed the breakfast and good service we offer.

The Lochshiel House Hotel is a 2* family run hotel in the West Highlands of Scotland. Approximately 1 hour from Fort William situated in Acharacle about 100 metres from the southern tip of Loch Shiel & at the Eastern entrance of the beautiful Ardnamurchan peninsula the most Westerly point of the British Mainland. Lochshiel House was built in the late 19th century as a hunting lodge & adapted to a local bar and hotel in the 70’s.
Our restaurant, situated on the ground floor serves breakfast from 8am until 9am except Sundays when it is from 9am until 10am. Open from 6pm until 9pm for main meals our kitchen offers a range of ‘made from scratch’ tasty homemade traditional choices & use local produce when possible. This includes local grown salad & vegetables, locally caught fish (fresh & smoked), meats sourced both from local farms & specialist suppliers & cheese from Mull, Arran & other local farms.
Our friendly locals bar offers Real Ale & over 100 different Whiskies. Pub activities such as pool & darts for those who wish to relax in the evenings or escape a daytime shower & we are dog friendly.
For those of you who love the natural beauty & wildlife of the Western Highlands there is plenty to do in the area with its wonderful walks, scenic drives, beaches, boat trips and many other leisure activities including fishing, biking and kayaking.
The area is steeped in history, as it was up Loch Shiel that Bonnie Prince Charlie sailed before landing at Glenfinnan in 1745 at the beginning of the famous Jacobite revolution. A visit to the area can also include visits to movie locations, as due to its natural beauty the area has been used in the making of many movies including Braveheart (Glen Nevis and Glencoe), Harry Potter (Glenfinnan), Rob Roy (Glen Nevis, Fort William), Local Hero (Morar/Arisaig) and Highlander (Glenfinnan). Of course, even more can be found with a simple trip to the Isles of Mull and Skye which are only short drives away
