I stayed in the Abbey Bridge on the 22 and 23 January 2012 with 3 friends as part of a shooting party from Northern Ireland. We normally don't expect too much from our B&B on these trips, just a comfortable bed and a good breakfast in the morning. The Abbey Bridge exceeded our expectations. Read less

The rooms and indeed the whole house was warm and spotlessly clean. Tea/coffee making facilities were in every room along with a TV, hair drier and even a clock radio (a rare thing in many B&Bs).
Dislikes:
I really can't fault this B&B.

Very quiet, lovely location, and you could take a short walk along to Lanercost Priory, which we did in the morning.

If you are looking for a relaxed and friendly home at the end of a long day walking Hadrian’s Wall; want a rural retreat where you can take a deep breath and unwind following a day out exploring this quiet but fascinating part of the world or are travelling between Scotland and England and need somewhere to rest for the night then the Abbey Bridge, is the B&B for you.
The Abbey Bridge was built in 1832 as a public house called the Black Bull, although there had been a hostelry on the site of what was an important crossing of the River Irthing for at least a couple of centuries beforehand. The building is Grade II listed and made from the local sandstone under a slate roof.
The rooms are warm, well equipped and ensuite. The beds are comfortable and the nights so quite you may find it difficult to get up for breakfast. Breakfasts are leisurely and we serve locally produced product where possible with lots of choice for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. We serve evening meals by arrangement and have a licensed bar.
Many of our guests are walking the Hadrian’s Wall long distance footpath, which is under a mile from Abbey Bridge. We have good clothes and boot drying facilities if the Cumbrian weather has been unfriendly.
